Viva Valdez
The first Latino family sitcom. The show was cancelled after less than a year. Actress Carmen Zapata, who played Sophia, noted that “We had writers coming out of the Catskills in New York.” Zapata’s comments, according to film and television journalist Andrew S. Vargas, insinuates that the show failed because of “its lack of cultural sensitivity.” Adding to Zapata’s commentary on the show’s writers Vargas cites the show’s story editor Howard Albercht’s memoir:
“How did five non-Latino writers know about Mexicans living in America?” he mused. “Sol and I wrote stories about a Jewish family. That we did know. The minute our all-Hispanic cast put in a couple of ‘Oy, Dios,’ they turned what we wrote into something that sounded like it came straight from south of the border.”
