A great metropolis is an intersection of all topics the world has ever known, so it stands to reason that the study of a great metropolis will require many communities of inquiry. The trans-disciplinary attitude of Ghost Metropolis is to ignore the boundaries and yet rely on the best scholarship or writings in each of the knowledge communities. The discursive traditions of history, urban studies, political science, art history, sociology, geography, international relations, ethnic studies, film and media studies are each in themselves very powerful, capable of great analytic or interpretive accomplishments. Like any traveler in good faith, I have learned to speak the languages of different discursive communities as best I can, to adopt their ways and practices. My goal is not to resolve differences between modes of inquiry, but to build upon their separate accomplishments to reach a new way of seeing the past.
