Margaret Kim (Margaret Cho), who is depicted as “Americanized,” clashes with her family who goes by more traditional “old country” Korean values. Supposedly based on Korean-American stand up comedian Margaret Cho’s material (Though Cho has disputed this). The show was criticized for perpetuating age old Asian and Asian American stereotypes. Though the show is about a Korean family, some of the other characters were played by Chinese and Japanese actors and actresses. In fact the majority of the cast was not Korean American and none of the directors, writers or producers were.
