BIFM, like MILF before them, believes that the national government is illegitimate and that the only peaceful solution is the creation of an independent Islamic state in the southern Philippines. Much of the BIFM ideology is focused upon the colonization of the Philippines by first the Spanish, followed by the occupation by the US. This colonization is seen by the BIFM as the foundation upon which a immoral national government that persecutes Muslim Filipinos was created.
