Mike's Technology Challenge - BR 6 - 10/7
This week, I read Brain Rules Chapter Six and chose to create a Google Site for the notes. Google offers free webspace and an easy to use format for updating the site. I don't think it's as user-friendly as Wordpress sites, but compared to using Dreamweaver, for instance, it's definitely designed for 'amateur' website designers.
I'll be honest, since I chose a website design program, I just copied and pasted my notes into the website. It doesn't look too pretty. I didn't take the time to make it pretty because I've done so rather often in the past, so in addition to sharing the link with my BR notes on them, I also am sharing sites created using other web-creation tools:
Google Sites - Brain Rules 6:
Google Sites - Simon Armitage Poetry Reading
Wordpress - Westshore Campus Tutoring Page (just went live a few weeks ago)
Boards.net - Writing Assessment Event
Wordpress - John Carroll University English sites (I created and then managed them for several years)
Out of all of them, I think Wordpress is my favorite to work with, but the Google Sites is nice because Google doesn't automatically put ads on your website (although you could use Google Adsense for revenue if you wanted).

Mike, I had no idea that Google allowed you to build sites like that (and for free, too). I have also never used Wordpress (thanks for sharing that it is easier to use). Also, thank you for sharing the various sites that you have built in the past; they are stunning. I can see may uses for building a site like this. I'll have to look up if many folks can collaborate on a page, or if each page is only for a single owner?Posted on 7 October 2014, 8:06 pm by Heather Laslie | Permalink
Kevin's Comments on Mike's Google Site
Like Heather, I had no idea that yhou could build a free Google site. I would like to know if you could build more than one page. I will look that up.Posted on 11 October 2014, 2:27 pm by Kevin M. Norris | Permalink
Google Site
Hi Kevin,Yes, you can create more than one Google Site. My understanding is that you can create as many as you like, although each account is limited to creating 5 new sites per week. There may be a storage maximum, but I'd have to look into that.
Thanks,
Mike

Kim Comment Mike Google Sites
I appreciate the inclusion of several website design sites. I have just started working with Wordpress, so was interested in your point that Wordpress is more user friendly. It made me wonder in what way? I have become a bit of Google convert in the last couple weeks so am interested in checking out the differencesPosted on 12 October 2014, 4:07 pm by Kimberly Fahle | Permalink
Sites
The bummer is you didn't really push your play in Sites. I too prefer WP; however, Sites has some bennies that this "small" assignment doesn't allow you to explore. Don't give up on it!Posted on 29 October 2014, 5:16 am by Shelley Rodrigo | Permalink
