Chvonne's BR/NL NoteTaking Challenge: NL 9

Note Taking Challenge: NL9

For this week’s note taking challenge, I used Scratch. Scratch is a website that provides free programming language where one can create interactive stories, games, and animations. I had never heard of or used Scratch before. Scratch was a bit difficult to understand at first. It is one of those applications where one must use the getting started guide. Before I created my little video, I looked at several videos and interactive games that other users created. The program allows one to choose/create backgrounds, use sprites/avatars/characters to act out movements, create speaking/thought bubbles, and insert sounds. The program allowed for insertion of text via the thought bubbles, but I was unsure of how much text I could include. Large chunks of text would defeat the purpose of the program

The tutorial walked me through creating a very basic video. This process helped me to understand how each aspect of the site worked enough to make a very simple video. There were other more advanced videos that provide instructions on how to make more complex videos and even games. For my video, I used the default sprite (a cat). I inserted scripts for it to walk, point, and turn. I also inserted text scripts with content from my reading notes. Because I was unsure of the amount of text that could fit in the program, I did not use many of my notes. As I stated before, large chunks of text would defeat the purpose of the program.

I enjoyed this program the most out of all the programs that I have explored so far this semester. It was fun to learn and then fun to use. I imagine if I had more time and a more specific and creative purpose that it would be a really fun program to use. As someone with no programming experience, it was nice to feel like I was “programming.” This is a simple script, but it does offer extensions of the script. With more experience, I could expand the scripts and create more complex video stories and games.  I could see this as program being used for students to present a breakdown of both sides of an issue by creating dialogue with two of the avatar/sprites.  I could also see this as a great space to present a presentation of a literacy narrative. The program is great for crafting stories.
