Mike's Technology Challenge - NL 9 - 10/28

My fuller notes on New Learning 9 are on my Reading and Thinking Notes page, but I decided to use Quizlet to create a web-based, mobile-friendly "quiz" practice, which would have been great for my Brit Lit class last week (darn it). You create questions and answers, and students can practice learning terms through flashcards, which Quizlet will actually read to them, track your learning, and even practice with the Quizlet app. I wasn't able to embed the quiz here, but here's a link to it (it's not very long): http://quizlet.com/_x8cky

This software has a lot of potential to help students study terms that they need to memorize. I could see the nursing students in, say, a medical terminology class really benefiting from an interactive study tool like this.

This week, I looked at Kim's Piktochart and Amy's Animoto posts.

Wow, Kim's piktochart flyer looks amazing. I love the template you chose, Kim. It looks like a professional designer created it, and I would imagine this is something that students would enjoy making and would be keen to keep in a portfolio. This is something that students could show potential employers, or, better yet, they could use Piktochart to create a cover letter or even resume, right? That would set them apart from the crowd! Nicely done.

After viewing Amy's Animoto video, I definitely want to play around with this program over the winter break. I've been looking for a software program that is easy to use but that can also create dynamic video that would engage students, and this video would definitely keep students' attention, in part due to Medina's brain rules and also in part due to Amy's fine work on this video. Very cool, and thanks for sharing.

Comment ot Mike's NL9 (Heather)

So, Quizlet looks really cool! I used socrative in a previous week and this looks similar. I like the "cards" part of the program that allows a student to study in the style of old fashioned flash cards. I also like the "test" section, where it sets the information up as a quiz. This looks like it could be a useful tool, thanks for sharing!

Amy's comments to Mike NL9

What a cool program! I especially like the "race" element in the end. Does the program distill these activities from the quiz questions FOR you, or do you have to create them yourself! The multi-approach elements of this quiz look especially useful for some of my concepts in ENGL 1020 (Research and Argument)!

Kim Comment-Mike Quizlet

I really like that program supports different studying/learning styles. The audio feature also supports multimodal learning and accessibility. Does the program support collaboration? For instance could a whole class collaborate and contribute a set of flash cards for a course?
