Chvonne's BR/NL NoteTaking Challenge: NL 7

https://sites.google.com/site/newlearningnotes/

For this weeks note taking challenge, I used GoogleSites. I had never used Google Sites before, but I had heard a lot about it. I was never interested in using Google Sites because of WordPress and Blogger.

GoogleSites was a bit confusing for me at first because I expected it to operate like WordPress and Blogger. However, it works more like GoogleDrive, so kind of like Microsoft Word. Once I got over this, everything was really easy
to set up. It doesn't have the drag and drop fun of Weebly. The site  appearance is also very simplistic. It seems like a few extra steps would be needed to have a cute or fancy design. If I had chosen one of the templates, I would have already had a bit more background for my site. I chose a few templates before deciding to use a blank template.
Many of the templates already had the headers. For example, I chose a composition notebook template, but it was geared towards a science class. I didn't want to deal with changing all of the headings to take notes, so I decided to use a blank template.  I have no colors or videos or navigation. The site didn't prevent me from doing anything. I was
able to insert a video, images, and a table with relative ease.

The greatest benefit of using Google Sites would be accessibility. Most schools use Google’s Gmail, so the students would automatically have access to Google Sites. Students could use this space for a blog, note taking, or any kind of assignment. The ability to easily create to and link to other pages was also nice. I often have trouble creating pages
and linking them on WordPress and Blogger. Matter of face, some Blogger templates do not allow multiple pages. This feature is something that I would definitely use for classes where there are multiple assignments or
multiple aspects of the class. For example, I would have liked to use the pages feature for the canonical text project. I was unable to create pages on my Blogger site.

I would allow my students to use Google Sites to keep notes, respond to discussion questions in a more visible and open space, or even post specific assignments. I think this would be perfect for multimodal assignments. I think Google Sites will handle images, videos, text, and audio better than Blackboard.

Kevin's Comments on Chvonne's Googlesites

I like the idea of Googlesites. It looks easy to use and I'm assuming that it is free. However, you are able to use templates and if you have gmail, it's easy to use. However, my school system doesn't use gmail, so I don't know if my students would be able to use it. Nevertheless, you have a very good description of the site.
