Mike Piero
My name is Mike Piero, and I'm an Assistant Professor of English (tenure track) at Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C) in Cleveland, OH. I earned my M.A. in English at John Carroll University, a private Jesuit university just outside of Cleveland. My B.A. is in Secondary Education: AYA Language Arts, and I'm still licensed to teach English in grades 7-12 in the State of Ohio. My academic interests include (post)modernist studies, cultural studies, critical theory, instructional technology and composition studies. I have a book review forthcoming in Teaching English in the Two-Year College and an article--"Coetzee, Blanchot, and the Work of Writing: The Impersonality of Childhood"--forthcoming in a special issue of MediaTropes, a peer-reviewed eJournal dedicated to media and mediation across various texts and disciplines.
With the above being said, my primary work lies in teaching students how to improve their own writing. I teach mostly composition, accelerated dev. ed., and British literature courses. I recently revised one of my main composition courses (ENG 1020) to run without a traditional textbook; instead, it makes use of open-source, electronic sources, and it has been a big hit with students. Over the summer, that course received Quality Matters (QM) recognition for adhering to high quality course design principles.
I look forward to learning new technologies in this course to integrate into my teaching of web-based courses (which I find often impact how I teach f2f classes, too). I'm kind of on software overload at the moment because I'm on a bazillion committees, including ones that have me evaluating 5 Learning Management Systems, learning Tk20, and learning TutorTrac, but hey, why not? I love working with technology in a way that enhances student learning and success. I also look forward to reading some theory and research related to how exactly students learn with technology.
I'm also taking this course to see how ODU's synchronous, web-based courses work in anticipation of applying to their Ph.D. in English program this winter. The program looks exciting and innovative, and from what I've seen so far, the technology used really enables a dynamic classroom experience.
I'm married and love spending time with my 2-year-old daughter.
