Incarcerees adapted to their sudden dislocation by creating self-reliant communities that enlisted local talents from within, such as dentists, farmers, and tailors as well as groups of shared social interests, that together helped resume some sense of normalcy in an otherwise extraordinary and stressful circumstance.

A War Relocation Authority photograph with the description "Evacuee farmers are harvesting Daikon, a large radish like vegetable which is a great delicacy among the Japanese people. It is eaten either raw, cooked or pickled. The seed for this crop was loaned by the Min Omata, unit foreman, from Fresno, California. This center harvested 65 acres of this vegetable, and is the only WRA project growing it in large quantities."
