Incarcerees adapted to their sudden dislocation by creating self-reliant communities that enlisted local talents from within, such as dentists, farmers, and tailors as well as groups of shared social interests, that together helped resume some sense of normalcy in an otherwise extraordinary and stressful circumstance.
