Bringing the Holy Land Home: The Crusades, Chertsey Abbey, and the Reconstruction of a Medieval Masterpiece

Where was the Relief with Addorsed Ducks produced?

The Relief with Addorsed Ducks is thought to have been produced in a workshop in Sorrento, Italy. Sorrento, a coastal city in the south of Italy, is located near major commercial ports such as Naples and Amalfi. In medieval times, smaller principalities were often controlled by regional dukedoms. The Duchy of Sorrento was a small peninsular duchy based in the city of Sorrento and was established as a feudal state under the Byzantine Duchy of Naples. The Duchy of Naples assisted Sorrento in defense against the Lombard dukes of Benevento in 839, potentially in the same lifetime as the producer of the Relief with Addorsed Ducks. In the ninth century, Naples separated from Byzantine rule, and in turn, granted Sorrento independence one year later in 840.
