Thanks for your patience during our recent outage at scalar.usc.edu. While Scalar content is loading normally now, saving is still slow, and Scalar's 'additional metadata' features have been disabled, which may interfere with features like timelines and maps that depend on metadata. This also means that saving a page or media item will remove its additional metadata. If this occurs, you can use the 'All versions' link at the bottom of the page to restore the earlier version. We are continuing to troubleshoot, and will provide further updates as needed. Note that this only affects Scalar projects at scalar.usc.edu, and not those hosted elsewhere.
The Latin American Bolero: A Transnational Popular Music

"Nunca" (1927)

"Nunca" is a bolero by Guty Cardenas, with lyrics by Ricardo López Méndez. Guty Cardenas, known as "el Ruiseñor Yucateco" was from Merida, Yucatan, who was a fan of Pepe Sanchez.  His performance style was similar to Maria Teresa Vera. Several recordings (of other songs) feature harmonizing in thirds and sixths, but this particular song is recorded with a single lead voice.

Yo sé que nunca besaré tu boca,
tu boca, flor de púrpura encendida;
yo sé que nunca llegaré a la loca
y apasionada fuente de tu vida.

Yo sé que inútilmente te venero,
que inútilmente el corazón te evoca;
pero a pesar de todo yo te quiero,
pero a pesar de todo yo te quiero,
aunque nunca besar pueda tu boca.

I know that I will never kiss your lips
Your lips, flower of bright purple hue
I know that I will never reach the crazy
And passionate fountain of your life

I know that I foolishly worship you
That foolishly your heart evokes
But in spite of everything I love you
But in spite of everything I love you
Although I’ll never be able to kiss your lips
