The Latin American Bolero: A Transnational Popular Music

Bolero Yucateco

The Yucatan peninsula in eastern Mexico is the closest point of contact with Cuba, with a distance of approximately 200 miles between the shores. It is not surprising then, that this is an important site of cultural exchange, and that the bolero (like other Cuban genres) had a great impact in the area.

I will feature two examples of bolero Yucateco (bolero of the Yucatan), which is its own regional sub-genre, that holds onto more traditional Cuban stylistic features. [1]
