Thanks for your patience during our recent outage at scalar.usc.edu. While Scalar content is loading normally now, saving is still slow, and Scalar's 'additional metadata' features have been disabled, which may interfere with features like timelines and maps that depend on metadata. This also means that saving a page or media item will remove its additional metadata. If this occurs, you can use the 'All versions' link at the bottom of the page to restore the earlier version. We are continuing to troubleshoot, and will provide further updates as needed. Note that this only affects Scalar projects at scalar.usc.edu, and not those hosted elsewhere.
The Latin American Bolero: A Transnational Popular Music

Agustin Lara's Boleros

Agustin Lara (1897-1970) is the most recognizable composer of boleros, known for transforming the genre into a popular, poetry-focused style. He was influenced by Sanchez and Cardenas. Of the development of the genre, he had this to say:

Yo no sabria distinguir técnicamente la metamorphosis de una musica que está marcada a cuatro tiempos. Lo único que puedo decir es que pude construer, o soñar, mejor dicho, un bolero que tenia palabras accesibles y que ademas era bailable; de ahí que ‘pegó’. Cuando compuse mis boleros, pensaba que me iban a lustrar mis zapatos..I don’t know how I would distinguish, technically, the metamorphosis of a music that is marked in four. All I can say is that I was able to construct, or more like dream, a bolero that had accessible words and that was also danceable; and from that it became a hit. When I composed my boleros I imagined they would add luster to my shoes.. [1]
