The Latin American Bolero: A Transnational Popular Music

"Presentimiento" (1924)

Written by Emilio Pacheco (1891 - 1964)

En route Mexico City, the bolero arrived in the Yucatan, where it became known as "bolero Yucateco," played in a style known as "trova Yucateca." These sub-genres remained relatively faithful to the Cuban styles. Emilio Pacheco of Campeche was one songwriter of bolero Yucateco. "Presentimiento" is one of his better-known songs, which he composed in 1924.

Sin saber que existias,
te deseaba,
antes de conocerte, te adiviné.
Llegaste en el momento
que te esperaba,
no hubo sorpresa alguna
cuando te hallé.

El día que cruzaste
por mi camino,
tuve el presentimiento
de algo fatal.
Esos ojos, me dije,
son mi destino,
y esos brazos morenos
son mi dogal.

Without knowing you existed,
I desired you,
Before meeting you, I imagined you
You arrived in that moment
In which I waited
There was no surprise
When I found you

The day that you crossed
Through my path
I had the foreboding sensation
Of some fatal occurrence
Those eyes, I told myself
Are my destiny
And those brown arms
Are my noose
