Jonathan Banfill: Author
(Author at Shougang Steel Factory, Pinguoyuan, Beijing)
I am a first year doctoral student at UCLA in Social Sciences and Comparative Education with an international focus. I was born and raised in Seattle and have a bachelor’s degree in Comparative History of Ideas from the University of Washington. I have a master’s degree from American University, Washington, D.C., in International Politics. My academic interests are in intellectual history and philosophy (both eastern and western), global politics, Chinese politics and society, critical thinking and critical theory, the humanities, and of course, education. I have spent much of the past decade in China, in both Beijing and Shanghai, most recently teaching at Tsinghua University as a lecturer in the School of Humanities.
Currently I focus on issues related to transnational/global education, specifically with China, but also open to comparison to other global areas and political situations. I am also interested in cities and urban space/theory, and how cities interact and intersect with education in the 21st century, particularly in the global/megacities of the Pacific Rim. Concurrent to my PhD I am also working on two certificates at UCLA: The first in the Seminar on Experimental Critical Theory and the second in the Graduate Certificate Program in Digital Humanities.
