Taijian Bowuguan

A museum for Eunuch's is a short bus ride from the end of the line. . . there are tombs, statues, and exhibits--even a mummified human, left cruelly in a glass case. There are other artifacts: knives and small pouches. . . It was built around the tomb of one of the Ming Dynasty's famous Eunuch's from Emperor Wanli's reign.

This is one of the strangest museums in the city, and perhaps one of the most sad. Throughout Chinese history Eunuch's populated the court, sometimes gaining immense power, but always living a hard life. Yiyun Li's short story "Immortality" tells a story of a village like this, where many of the boys became Eunuchs. It is a strange place, quiet on a afternoon, but worth a visit . . .
