‘A Woman of Great Courage’: Women in the Printing Trades in Early Modern Europe

Magdalena Morhard (1505-1574) (The widow of Ulrich Morhard)

After the death of her first husband, Magdalena Morhard (1505-1574) married Ulrich Morhard, who ran a printing press in Tubingen, Germany. After Ulrich’s death in 1554, Magdalena continued to work in the shop. Her children from her first marriage worked alongside her in what has been acknowledged as a financially successful business. She is often identified in imprints as “Ulrich Morharts Witfrau”, or, as shown in this imprint, as "Viduam Ulrichi Morhardi", which are both translated as Ulrich Morhard's widow.
