Thanks for your patience during our recent outage at scalar.usc.edu. While Scalar content is loading normally now, saving is still slow, and Scalar's 'additional metadata' features have been disabled, which may interfere with features like timelines and maps that depend on metadata. This also means that saving a page or media item will remove its additional metadata. If this occurs, you can use the 'All versions' link at the bottom of the page to restore the earlier version. We are continuing to troubleshoot, and will provide further updates as needed. Note that this only affects Scalar projects at scalar.usc.edu, and not those hosted elsewhere.

The tool is called Voyant which is a scholarly platform for text analysis used in the burgeoning field of digital humanities. The Voyant dashboards below are a series of visualizations based on the 3+ million words of text scraped from the URLs identified in the search procedure (Note: Voyant is a third-party platform still in development. If you receive an error message while loading Voyant visualizations, simply click through the error message or reload the page).
The default visualizations in Voyant include:
a word cloud (top left panel)
a reader showing all the underlying text (center panel)
a trends panel showing the relative frequency of the five most common words in the corpus
a summary (bottom left panel)
a keywords in context panel (bottom right panel)
These panels are 'live' windows into the underlying text data (comprising approximately 3 million words) gleaned from the 1200 URLs. They are 'live' in the sense that users can access Voyant's search functions and various analytical tools to explore the text data for terms and relationships of their own choosing (e.g., Does the term 'Basel Convention' occur in the corpus? If so, in what contexts? Do particular people or organizations appear in the corpus? If so, in what contexts?).
Users are not obliged to interact with the Voyant panels below before continuing on to other parts of the controversy map. To continue onward, simply follow the menu choices available at the bottom of the page or click the table of contents button at the top left of the screen.
