Burlesque, through its use of humor and non-normativity (in neo-burlesque) subverts the dominant hegemonic system. Burlesque performers use bawdy humor as a a way to gain a distinct power over their predominantly male audiences. Neo-burlesque celebrates non-normative bodies and therefore challenges hegemonic beauty.
