- “Not scary, not funny, not realistic. Not recommended”
- “The direction and acting was quite terrible.”
- “It gives some insight into Gacy, but it’s not too in depth.”
- “I do not suggest this movie. Poor acting, and too fictional story for it to be 'claimed' to be based on Gacy's horror killing spree.”
- “I’m pretty sure Gacy's life wasn't this boring.”
- “In this unenlightening, dramatized account of Gacy's crime spree, first-time writer-director Clive Saunders, working with television writer David Birke, displays little genuine interest in why Gacy killed.”
- “Expected more, poorly acted.”
- “I know the Gacy story pretty well and was deeply disappointed that this boring, cheap piece of waste isn't it.”
- “A dreadfully slow and fictionalized account of The Killer Clown. So many inaccuracies pepper this made-for-TV-movie making it ridiculous and tedious. Poor characterization and meandering story. Watch a Nat Geo documentary instead.”

Reviews from IMDB:
- “A must see!”
- “To Catch a Killer is a truly disturbing film. But like other disturbing stories, this one was done extremely well. It was meant for TV and not for the big screen. Brian Dennehy was simply incredible as John Wayne Gacy & I feel this is the best role that he has ever played
- “Great acting, compelling drama will truly have you rooting for the good guys.”
- “This was a film that was clearly made as an historical document rather than for either plaudits or profit.”
- “Outstanding on every level.”
- “They used an actor with too much charisma.”
- “Could have been a lot better.”
- “The plot, being based on a true story, lacks the thrills of a fictional account.”
- “Well acted and directed.”
