The Gold Star is the Nigerian equivalent of the Academy Awards, which are typically seen as a promotional country wide event to encourage the film industry within the United States and the world. The Gold Star has an equivalent industry focused agenda and similar voting structure to the Academy Awards.
Many Makokoan graduates of the Floating Education System have gone on to win Nigeria's prestigious Gold Star.
In regards to the history of water privatization in Nigeria and the coinciding growth of tensions between Makoko and Lagos, the 1st annual Lagos Film Fest included a winner of best narrative feature: "The Great Game." The film is about the group of renegade Lagos businessmen, economists, and politicians who met in secret to create the Lagos Water Economy. "The Great Game" went on to win Nigeria's "Gold Star."
