Unemployment is a huge problem in Africa, especially in Nigeria. Entrepreneurship and small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are the solutions, another way to create jobs and contribute to the overall economic growth of the continent. In Makoko, there exists a "Culture of risk taking." They are active and talented. They have a lot to contribute to the entire world.
An entrepreneurial culture needs a special environment, not only economic necessities. Creativity and innovation are the key, and undoubtedly Nigerians have them in their DNA.
In Lagos, the demography has changed. In the last 20 years, textiles were the largest industry, one of the main sources of jobs in Lagos. But that industry collapsed when China came into the country. Nowadays, tourism and services, tech and maker communities are one of the most important ways to earn money in Makoko.
One of the most powerful examples of entrepreneurship is Roye Okupe, writer, and creator of the African Superheros. YouNeek Studios is a hub for “YouNeek” and creative character-based storytelling and entertainment. Through the use of animation, digital comics (as well as print), graphic novels, film and other popular media, they build a library of eclectic characters that appeal to a broad audience. They putt he focus on telling extraordinary stories about extraordinary characters.
