Demolition of 2012
The Makoko Water Front Community was demolished on the 16th of July 2012 by the Lagos state government after a short notice of eviction. More than 10,000 people lost their houses.
The Makoko community has existed for over 200 years, and the community members are mainly fishermen and women.
TIMOTHY HUNKPOYANWA, one of the leaders of the community, was killed during the fire of 2012. His family was devastated. He left his wife with a little four years old son, Ajé. His brother, Noah, promises that his death will be honored and avenged. According to Makoko residents, the victim was said to be advising protesting residents on how to conduct themselves during a planned peaceful protest before the police corporal aimed and shot at him. Twelve residents were also arrested for protesting on the Makoko lagoon.
