Makoko 2035: An Encyclopedia

Jay Austin

Jay Austin, 63, lives in the floating slum of Makoko and is constantly on Lagos Island overseeing the moisture farms which are run as a cooperative with other five younger women: The Moisture Harvesting Sisterhood.

She left her tribe, moved to Lagos and changed her name. Iliterate, she became homeless for a few years before developing the portable water collecting structures. In collaboration with designers, bioengineers and hackers, a system was developed where water is also collected from the atmosphere with the help of a genetically modified fungus cultivated on top of the structures.

Even though the water is harvested under ilegal conditions (often with structures attached to abandoned buildings), it is widely commercialized due to its cheap price and high purity standards.
