Thanks for your patience during our recent outage at scalar.usc.edu. While Scalar content is loading normally now, saving is still slow, and Scalar's 'additional metadata' features have been disabled, which may interfere with features like timelines and maps that depend on metadata. This also means that saving a page or media item will remove its additional metadata. If this occurs, you can use the 'All versions' link at the bottom of the page to restore the earlier version. We are continuing to troubleshoot, and will provide further updates as needed. Note that this only affects Scalar projects at scalar.usc.edu, and not those hosted elsewhere.

Scalar's visualizations enable you to see the contents of your book rendered in a variety of ways. You can access and customize book-level visualizations through the Visualizations item under the compass menu in the header bar. Because specific visualizations can also be made the default view for a page, however, it's also possible to integrate them directly into your book. Unlike their book-level counterparts, these embedded visualizations generally show only content linked to the current page. If you're working with structure in a way that's not immediately apparent at the page level, a visualization may be a good way to help readers conceptualize the "shape" of your content.
All visualizations have been created using the D3.js library.
