Scalar 2 User's Guide

Text Annotators

Scrible

Scrible is a free bookmarklet which enables users to highlight, color, or otherwise manipulate text on webpages (make bold, underline, italicize or strikethrough) in order to call out or comment on key passages. Users can save the pages they've marked up into their Scrible library as well as create specific permalinks to those pages. Scrible is ideal for readers who wish to conduct and/or share research while viewing Scalar articles, books or projects.

To use Scrible, simply head over to www.scrible.com and sign up for an account.

Hypothes.is

Hypothes.is also offers a free plugin (for use with Chrome only) which allows users to highlight and comment on portions of a webpage. But unlike Scrible, where one has to share their annotated page via their Scrible library or by creating a special permalink to it, anyone with a Hypothes.is account can view comments made by others "in the wild," that is, on the webpages themselves. Hypothes.is also allows other users to reply to existing comments, thus allowing discussion threads to emerge.

To start using Hypothes.is, download their plugin and then sign up for an account.
