Take this gold headband. Beyond the intrinsic value of the gold itself, a historian may value its age and ability to teach us about its culture, a goldsmith may value its workmanship and any other individual may value it for an infinite number of other reasons. Through its shifting interpretations and functions determined by differing value sets, an object gains a life of its own, telling the story of its creators, its owners and its ever-changing journey. While we may not have the ability to piece together every moment of this head band’s story, we gain insight into it and our world through snapshots in time.
