Bringing the Holy Land Home: The Crusades, Chertsey Abbey, and the Reconstruction of a Medieval Masterpiece

Why was this made, and how was it used?

This pen box was used to house pens and other writing tools. Due to the fact that literacy and writing skills were rare in 11th-century Italy, the box served as a sign of elite status and skill. This box was made for the eldest Mansone son, Taurus, and was intended to highlight his scholarly abilities.
