Company 3271 was organized at Camp Dix, New Jersey, on July 6,1938, and was placed under the command of Captain Frank S. Marcus, Eng-Res. The company proceeded to California and occupied Camp Soda Springs at Butte Meadows. While there, our men did their part in building Ponderosa Way – a giant fire trail that stretches nine hundred miles down the length of California. Thousands of gooseberry plants were destroyed as a blister rust control project. For three weeks the company fought the Great Shasta Fire.

Allison A. Cohen, 1st Lt., Inf-Res. Joined the organization in September. In October the company moved to Yankee Hill, California, and occupied Camp Concow. While there a varied work project was carried on. Roads were constructed, banks were sloped, pack trails were built, timber stands were improved, and a lookout trail and tower were constructed. At Burney Mountain a spike camp was established. In three weeks, 300,000 trees were planted. This accomplishment was recognized in an official commendation received from the Forest Service Headquarters. The most important fire that season was the Crab Louse fire on Humbug Mountain.

In June, 1939, the company was transferred to the Fort Missoula District and constructed a new camp at Stryker, Montana. A crew of thirty-five men occupied a spike camp at Chicken Creek that summer and fall. Though road construction is important, snag felling is the chief project. It has been estimated that there is ten years work in the vicinity of Camp Stryker.
