Thanks for your patience during our recent outage at scalar.usc.edu. While Scalar content is loading normally now, saving is still slow, and Scalar's 'additional metadata' features have been disabled, which may interfere with features like timelines and maps that depend on metadata. This also means that saving a page or media item will remove its additional metadata. If this occurs, you can use the 'All versions' link at the bottom of the page to restore the earlier version. We are continuing to troubleshoot, and will provide further updates as needed. Note that this only affects Scalar projects at scalar.usc.edu, and not those hosted elsewhere.

1media/Anti war protests at the University of California, San Diego, 1970..jpg2018-05-11T09:52:40-07:00Sample Page by Professor P19This is the template each student should use to create their page.image_header2018-06-15T10:56:44-07:00Each student will create one page with a description of their project and both the Trigger Image and final edited video embedded onto the page as well. You will need to import both your Trigger Image and Video as media files. It is really important that you add the geo-coordinates of your Aura's location to both the Trigger Image and Video.
You also need to give your project a thoughtful and compelling title and Header Image. To select an image as your "Header," you will need to import it first as a media file. Then, you can go to the "Styling" drop down menu below, select "Key Image," and then pick your image from the media files.
PLEASE be sure to label any media you import with your name and identifiable title. We have 24 students all working within the same book and it will start to get very confusing as to which media files belong to whom.
The content of your page should breakdown roughly as follows:
Brief description of topic/theme (2 paragraphs) Your page should open with a 2 paragraph overview of your selected topic/theme and why you chose to pursue this issue. What brought you to this particular matter and why do you believe it to be relevant to the broader campus community? Why is it relevant to you personally? It's okay to keep the details of your response to this latter question vague since we all have different boundaries about how much of our lives we wish to make publicly available.
Brief description of your creative approach (2 paragraphs) How did you choose to go about representing this particular issue/topic/theme and why? Here are some pretty basic questions that should be covered in your response. 1. Whom did you choose to interview and why? Or, if you opted to use voice-over, tell us why. 2. What materials did you use as B-Roll and why? 3. How did you assemble your visual story and why? Why did you choose to cut between your subject(s) and B-Roll in a particular way? Does your story follow a pretty linear progression? If so, why? If you chose to create a more poetic and evocative piece, why? In other words, why did you choose to tell it in the way that you did? 4. What did you learn through this process? What surprised you, what did you find disappointing?
Brief Overview of Aura Location and Trigger Image (1 paragraph) Clearly describe where your Aura is located. Remember to make it clear for folks who are not particularly familiar with the campus. Please also explain what Trigger Image you decided to use and why you chose this particular combination of location and image. Then embed your Trigger Image directly onto your page (e.g. below):
When selecting your Formatting Options, be sure to align your image at "Center" and select "Medium" for the image size.
Embed Final Video When selecting your Formatting Options, be sure to align your video at "Center" and select "Large" for the video size.
