Thanks for your patience during our recent outage at scalar.usc.edu. While Scalar content is loading normally now, saving is still slow, and Scalar's 'additional metadata' features have been disabled, which may interfere with features like timelines and maps that depend on metadata. This also means that saving a page or media item will remove its additional metadata. If this occurs, you can use the 'All versions' link at the bottom of the page to restore the earlier version. We are continuing to troubleshoot, and will provide further updates as needed. Note that this only affects Scalar projects at scalar.usc.edu, and not those hosted elsewhere.

How We Brought Dance Back - by Juri Ito

Topic
Winter quarter 2018, I took a Jazz class with my friend. Neither of us are Dance majors, however we both enjoyed the class and were up and ready in the dance studio every Tuesday and Thursday from 8:30AM. I was shocked and confused when our professor told us that her classes were suddenly cut next quarter- why would the department cut them when they were in such high demand? Which classes will the Dance majors take instead to fulfill their curriculum? How are the students reacting to this sudden cuts? Students were shocked, furious, and ready to fight. This short documentary describes the journey of how the students got the classes back, straight from the student that lead the movement. The happy ending to this event is a reminder that students' voices matter, and demand to be heard. Also, this video was made in honor of the community and lovely group of friends from the Theatre and Dance Department. Thank you for being such powerful, graceful, inspiring artists- keep on rocking it!
Creative Approach
Parts of the story are already up on the UCSD Guardian articles, but I wanted this documentary to visually capture the vibrant and energetic dance community and their voices. I made sure the sound and music reflected the students' rigorousness, and also tried to edit the footages to match the tempo. Unfortunately I had to cut many of the interview footages to make it into 3 minutes. I focused on getting straight to the point and telling what exactly happened rather than the emotional responses. I believe that the anecdotes they shared (and how they described them) conveyed their passion and emotions well enough- it was very clear how much they cared for the community and classes. Special thanks to Astrid Espitia and Professor Arcidiacono for being such wonderful interviewees and sharing their stories. Thank you to the tap class for letting me film Broll- the dance class clips definitely helped to visually tell that the students were all in it together.
Aura Location
The aura location is the Molli and Arther Wagner Dance Building behind Galbriath Hall in Revelle. This is where we filmed both interviews. I thought about having it somewhere else on campus because the Dance district is somewhat secluded from the rest, but I felt that it's only appropriate to have the trigger image here since this is where you can feel the energy- once you're in the building you instantly hear jazz music or shoes rhythmically tapping.
