Art n Humanity in UCSD - Mira Han
Topic
University of California San Diego was largely known as a heavy STEM university. As a student double majoring in two BA program: Theatre and Communication, I always feel like I am not supported by the school. As a student who wants her future career related with the film productions, I am always afraid that the production skills that I had learnt from undergraduate unable me from being a competitive producer. Even though some of the art and humanity departments in UCSD were highly ranked in the national rankings, the students from those majors do not have the feelings of belonging and feel being supported by UCSD. This documentary listened to the interviewees: three students from Visual Art department and one from Communication, and told the opinions and experiences from those students being in the majors that are not highly supported.Creative Approach
The reason why I was doing the topic of Art and Humanity was the closure of University Art Gallery. I was thinking about being marginalized in the school that heavily dependent on STEM majors. Therefore, when we were required to shoot the footage, I started my topic with my interviewees. They talked about the production support from school, and even generally the questions: What does art mean for society. Then I realized the questions being too general and broad. One day I was on the bus with a new friend who was from Visual Art department, we were talking about how few the production courses that the department have provided and the unreasonable structure of courses. I decided to digress my topic to fully exploring the structure of courses related to productions and the faculty ratio from art and humanity departments.Aura Location
