At University of California, San Diego has caused many students to complain. There are many reasons behind why parking is one of the biggest problems at UCSD. UCSD has approved construction for a Seventh College recently, which means that the University is continually accepting more and more students. However, they cannot house all of the students who wants to live on campus, so 400 students have been assigned to live in the West and North Mesa residences. This is causing many problems because the students are having difficulty accessing any permanent dining halls, and they are currently relying on the use of food trucks. Likewise, because of the increasing enrollment each year, there is a lack of housing, which is connected to the lack of parking since many students decided to live off-campus, which means that more students are driving to school.

Along with this problem, even though the number of undergraduate students is higher than the number of faculty and graduate’s students, there are currently more available parking spots for graduate students and faculty. This raises another problem in that students parking in this neighborhood sometimes have their cars blocked by the locals’ driveways if those students cannot find any parking spots. Thus, I think that this issue should not just be restricted at UCSD, but it should also be relevant to the bordering campus community.

As a transfer student at UCSD, I have seen many friends who have cars and they find it very difficult to find a parking space, even though they pay for a pricy parking permit each quarter. Whenever they come back to their dorm, they always complain that they feel like they are losing money trying to find a parking spot on campus. So, I thought that this is a serious issue for the students, even though I did not have a parking permit at that time. They have had to find parking spaces at the Muir parking lot, since the Pangea parking spots and the parking spots next to Rady’s building were always full, and they were not enough spaces for the students. So, I personally think parking is a problematic issue regarding the student population.

When I decided my topic and came up with ideas of how to make a documentary video, I wanted to focus on the students view regarding the issue, since it is the students that are a particularly suffering. So, I asked for my friends who have or had a parking permit and wanted to listen their experiences.

I thought that it would be helpful and creative to follow one of my friends who has a parking permit, and I set a timer to see how long it took her to find a student parking space at noon. We started from the Revelle college, since she usually has class at Revelle collge, but she could not find a space, so we head to Muir parking spaces, but unfortunately, it was also full, too. So, we ended up finding a parking spot at Pangea, which is all the way on the other side of Revelle college, and it took an hour for her to find a student parking space. Lastly, I wanted to address the solutions that the University is currently planning such as a trolley Extension, which is expected to start service in 2021. For the schools’ future transportation, I asked the people whom I interviewed what would you they expect for University transportation, as well as parking office about these problems.

Trigger Image

I chose the Geisel library for my trigger image, because Geisel the library is one of the best represented structure at UCSD, and people would also be able to easily access this image, even if they were unfamiliar with the campus.
