For most college students, keeping track of their daily expenses is a quite usual habit. Besides, most of the students are already suffering from tuitions and supported by their parents which make students need to be aware of how they are spending the money, given the fact that they still need to take care of their academic and so on.Moving from off-campus to on-campus, this transition causes me paying a lot of attention to the food difference. And because of the food contract bundle that it's a must to sign up if you decided to live on-campus which leads to on-campus food becomes the only option, so I experienced and came across with the food on-campus almost every day for two years. There are six colleges, and about 40% of the student live on campus, food such a daily essential thing, students are living with it. Thus, I intend to raise awareness and gain students resonance and acknowledgment of the issue.
Approach
I picked a more nature and realism approach by following a subject for a day in UCSD. By this approach, I am trying to create a more daily life and more real feeling to reflect the reality. I shot some interviews and an interview and voice over with my subject. However, for my submission video, I don't have time to include those.My approach tends to be more evocative in a way to gain student's resonance of what really happening. I had the daily routine as B-roll, the idea is a day in UCSD and the struggle that every student will have a chance to come across with. I learned a lot through this process, comparing to film the difference are that the challenge for a film is how to present your idea, but for a documentary, there is actually way more attribute that you need to consider or even you couldn't control. Therefore the challenge becomes what can you get with that many restrictions, for example, the subject or interview availability, location and the context that you are reaching. Still is about finding your own objectives and style. The last thing I figure out for a documentary is that it is actually more convincing than film. Always there is room for improvement.
Trigger Image
Aura location is at the market in the village. Since the market is the hub of the village and the village has lived the most students among all the on-campus location and market is where everyone will go the most. This trigger image is right outside the market so it is very obvious and choosing the shopping cart as a trigger image can let everyone easily recognize it.
