Thanks for your patience during our recent outage at scalar.usc.edu. While Scalar content is loading normally now, saving is still slow, and Scalar's 'additional metadata' features have been disabled, which may interfere with features like timelines and maps that depend on metadata. This also means that saving a page or media item will remove its additional metadata. If this occurs, you can use the 'All versions' link at the bottom of the page to restore the earlier version. We are continuing to troubleshoot, and will provide further updates as needed. Note that this only affects Scalar projects at scalar.usc.edu, and not those hosted elsewhere.

In the campus of UCSD, traffic and safety issues have always been a headache and concern for students. The issue I want to record has always been a problem that bothers me. When I was in a community college, I didn’t think skateboards and bicycles are a safety problem on campus because the school had fewer students. After I transfer to UCSD, it is a huge campus, students, in addition, to walk to get to class on campus, in order to save time or because of the distance between classrooms, some students choose to skateboard or ride a bicycle to the classroom. So there has more skateboarder and more student ride bicycle. In most places, they all need to use the same path as walking students, every day, students who slide skateboard fall or hit a person on a bicycle.
Especially now students like to look down at mobile phones or listen to music, and also the lack of enforcement of these riders poses a serious security threat to students. When they come down from the height, they may be wrong because of the speed of skateboarding or cycling, or if they do not stop with good skills. This increases even more gradually became a security risk.
For this project, I interview a couple of students. In the beginning, I randomly chose three students, one walker, one skateboarder, and one biker. I choose them because I want to understand students’ viewpoints from different perspectives. However, the limitation of this is that students have limited time. The questions I ask are limited, and I do not have enough insight into what everyone thinking. So I re-scheduled the appointment with other three students and conducted an in-depth interview. The effect is obviously much better this time. I have plenty of time for the interviewee to think and repeat the language that they think they can organize better.
This is my first time recording a documentary film and it is a brand new process for me. I realized that a perfect as much as possible storyboard is very helpful for shooting. What frustrates me is that there are many risks in outdoor shooting, and there are many uncontrollable factors. This makes my picture texture not very good.
My Aura trigger image I choose is a sign that shows no skateboard and bicycle allowed that is next to the Geisel Library. I feel it express my idea clearly and grab attention immediately.
