Cleveland's Nonprofit All-Stars

Chapter One: MOCA's Impact

MOCA is an all-star because of the many benefits it creates in the Cleveland community. Through its exhibits, MOCA connects the community. One of the goals of the museum is to “bring the work of emerging and established regional, national, and international artists to our area” (MOCA). For many of the featured artists, it is their first solo show. MOCA provides an opportunity for new artists to gain exposure and experience within the art world. It also has established internship opportunities for students studying art or art history at the Cleveland Institute of Art and Case Western Reserve University, which also encourages new or aspiring artists.

Art is a valuable aspect of life. It has the power to inspire, teach, challenge, open minds, and broaden horizons. For children, exposure to art increases motor skills, language development, decision making, visual learning, inventiveness, and cultural awareness. There is also a correlation between art and improved academic performance. A 2013 study showed that on average, students who visited art museums performed 9% of a standard deviation higher in their ability to reason critically (Journalist Resource). Art is also important for adults because it inspires thought, reflection, and connection. Contemporary art ignites a new kind of thinking, and is a way to keep in touch with the ever-changing world. For these reasons, art museums are important to have in communities. Because MOCA is the only contemporary art museum in northeastern Ohio, it is invaluable. This is another contributing factor to its all-star status.

Another benefit of MOCA is the economic impact. Museums are an important factor in the tourism economy. Each year, MOCA draws more than 40,000 visits, which stimulates spending through parking, dining, and retail purchases(Rudy Bruner Awards). The recipients of revenue from these purchases then use the money to buy goods and services. The process continues, creating a multiplier effect that further benefits the economy.

One of the biggest ways MOCA has contributed to Cleveland is through its participation in the revitalization of the Uptown District. The Uptown District is a vibrant urban area located in University Circle. It features eateries, shops, and a plaza available for cultural community events. Prior to the revitalization, 85% of the retail space in the area was vacant or seriously underutilized(Rudy Bruner Awards). Beginning around 2004, the city decided to transform the area into a fun, urban space. Community partners were essential in order to create the desired arts, education, and retail district. MOCA is one of the partners, and was highly engaged throughout the project(Rudy Bruner Awards). The development of the district has been extremely positive for Cleveland. In 2012, MOCA became the anchor for the district(MOCA). Today, MOCA is considered the “living room” of the district. MOCA’s presence in such an important part of Cleveland is another reason the organization receives all-star status.
