Cleveland's Nonprofit All-Stars

Chapter One: KBB Impact

The reason the Kids' Book Bank is such an all-star is because it effectively addresses a very important issue. Most everyone agrees that books are essential for educational success, but not everyone may understand just how important books truly are for children. Research by Mariah Evans, of the University of Nevada, reveals that books in the home are just as impactful to a child’s future education as having university educated parents (Evans). Reading is vital to success in both life and school, and is starts with exposing children to books at a young age. A book-oriented home allows for development in numerous areas, including vocabulary, comprehension skills, imagination, and more. Books expose children to quality writing and argument formation. They also provide information, and allow for increased knowledge of history, geography, culture, and many other subjects. Kids who grow up with books in the home are shown to have increased levels of education, which leads to more opportunity and higher productivity later on in life. Therefore, ensuring that children have books around is critical, especially for low-income children because, as the report discovered, “the gains are not equally great across the entire range; instead they are larger at the bottom, far below elite level, in getting children from modest families a little further along in the first few years of school” (Evans).

The Kids' Book Bank has taken this cause to heart. Co-Founders Judy Payne and Judi Kovach further expanded on the importance of their mission during an interview.
