Chapter One: MOCA Background

The gem shaped building of the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) is not the only sparkling quality of the museum. Founded in 1968, MOCA has been a center of creative thought for many years. The museum aims to
push the boundaries of innovation, creativity and exploration through exhibitions, publications, education and outreach programs. It offers a, “unique and dynamic place for the visual art of our time.” The exhibits change three times a year, allowing exposure to fresh and new thought during different visits. MOCA has many educational programs geared towards helping audiences of all ages engage with contemporary art. Programs include: guided tours, artist talks, interactive education spaces for kids, exSCHOOLsive tours, seasonal art-making days, and the ArtSquad.

In order for MOCA to be able to change exhibits throughout the year, as well as provide these programs, the museum needs funding. Therefore, donations are very important. Gifts to the annual fund support all activities, from educational school programs to exhibits to public programs. MOCA also receives sponsorship and foundation support.

Volunteers perform a wide range of tasks at the museum. Some examples include working in visitor services, helping with a program or event, or aiding in the store. There is a task for everybody. As a thank you, MOCA offers some perks for being a volunteer: Free admission to the exhibition during volunteer hours, one guest pass per season, 10% discount in the store, invitation to and recognition at the annual volunteer recognition event.
