Population of Tokyo

Who lives in Tokyo?
As of 2010, the National Census reports three age categories for the population of Tokyo.
1. Children (0-14)- 1.477 million (11.4% of total population)
2. Working age (15-64)- 8.85 million (68.2% of total population)
3. Aged Population (65+)- 2.642 million (20.4% of total population)

These statistics show that Tokyo has a huge working aged population. Children and the aged population is a lot less than the working aged. This represents Tokyo as a city where people move to for work and investment rather than for fun and leisure. It also shows that many people in Tokyo do not have children. Many of them prefer to keep working and hold off having children.

The National Census of 2005 shows that those who are employed are viewed by four different occupation groups. The agriculture, fisheries, and forestry industry employs 28,000 people. 1.343 million people hold jobs in manufacturing and transportation-related. 1.718 people hold jobs in sales and services. And 2.632 million have clerical, management, and technical occupations. These statistics show the most popular jobs and industries in Tokyo.
There is a huge field of clerical, management, technical, sales and services but that is found almost everywhere. The large number of jobs in manufacturing and transportation shows what kind of corporations are in Tokyo. Many corporations in Tokyo rely on foreign investment and tourism. The large transportation industry show that Tokyo has efficient public transportation that people rely on to get around the city.

The National Census of 2005 also reports that the daytime population of Tokyo is 14.978 million and the nighttime population is 12.416 million. Tokyo has more people during the day as expected since people are normally awake during those hours. The nighttime population is a huge number and shows that Tokyo is a lively and safe city even at night. It shows that there is so much energy flowing through the city at all times. It also represents Tokyo as a city for those who are young and have the ability to stay awake odd hours. This large nighttime population creates more capital since businesses are open late and there are millions of people flowing through. Having a significant nighttime population is attractive to tourists since it provides tourists places to go to after hours. Tourists may find it interesting that Tokyo has such a large night life and there are still a lot of people flowing through Tokyo at night.
