Passport to Love
“Passport to Love1,” a successful Vietnamese film directed by Victor Vu, portrays two young men from Saigon, Vietnam who study abroad in the United States. This film takes place both in Saigon and Orange County. The two boys fall in love with American women. Khang falls for a single mother while Hieu, who was engaged, falls for a pageant queen. Both of the boys were supposed to be in America just to go to school and bring home an American degree2.
This film was set in two different global cities, Saigon and Los Angeles. It represents the two different cities and cultures. "Passport to Love" shows that Saigon relies heavily on foreign investment and education since both of the boys are sent to the United States for a better education in hopes of becoming successful businessmen. The United States is a huge influence when it comes to business in Saigon. As seen in the film, the U.S plays a huge role in Khang and Hieu's future when it comes to love and education.
Although Saigon can be portrayed as a poor city, it has modernized significantly. The cars and the lifestyle of Khang shows the modern part of Saigon.
On the other hand, Los Angeles (Orange County) is represented as a city where many Asian (in this case, Vietnamese) settle. Khang and Hieu have no problem finding Vietnamese love interests and friends who can speak Vietnamese. Soon after they arrive in the United States, they are able to find a Vietnamese restaurant which shows that there is a large Vietnamese population.
