Tokyo
Tokyo is a wonderful global city with many businesses, shopping districts and tourist attractions. It is the current capital of Japan (previously was Kyoto). According to the Martin Prosperity Institute's ranking of global cities, Tokyo was listed as number 21 overall. It received high scores especially for technology and education performance5. With its modern technology (cars and electronics) and successful corporations, it is important to study Tokyo as a global city. Tokyo is known for its technology which can be traced back to the time when Japan began to assimilate and learn about Western culture and technology.
However, Martin Prosperity Institute gave Tokyo a "C" grade for tolerance. This is the acceptance of different religions, customs, sexual orientations, and cultures. Diversity in Tokyo was given a "D" grade since the majority of Tokyo is Japanese. In addition to a low/average tolerance grade, Tokyo is extremely overcrowded and it is one of the most expensive cities to live in. It also faces natural disasters but is able to rebuild itself.
Tokyo will host the 2020 Olympics which will boost its tourism. The Narita International Airport serves the Tokyo area. The majority of flights going to and from Japan take place at this airport. Public transportation in Tokyo is very efficient. People can take the subway or the Japan Rail train for long and short distances.
Many Japanese come to Tokyo to work or go to school, which makes it a global city. There are great universities in Tokyo such as Keio University and the University of Tokyo. Along with the universities are major businesses and corporations. Tokyo is home to Sony, Mitsubishi UFC Financial Group, Casio, Canon, Fuji Television, Mitsubishi Electric, Nikon, Sharp Corporation, and many more. There are also car companies with headquarters located in Tokyo such as Honda and Toyota. Based off of this information, Tokyo is a city that is well known for electronics and cars.
Tokyo has a large amount of commuters. Most of the commuters live in prefectures close to Tokyo. Tokyo has a huge population of 13 million people1. There are approximately 408,000 registered foreigners in Tokyo which includes Chinese, Korean, Filipino, and Brazilians.2 Texts about or take place in Tokyo include Number 9 Dream by David Mitchell and After Dark by Haruki Marukami. Movies include Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift. Tourist attractions in Tokyo include the Tokyo Tower, Disneyland, Meiji Shrine, Tokyo Imperial Palace, Ginza, Shibuya, and the Edo Castle.
This is a great video that shows the things that Tokyo has to offer. It includes the temples, shrines, the incredible population, transportation, and even the cat cafe. It shows what a beautiful global city Tokyo is and what it has to offer for tourists and locals.
