Non Vietnamese Media about Vietnam
Heaven and Earth1 was directed and written by Oliver Stone and was based on Le Ly Hayslip’s When Heaven and Earth Changed Places. This film is about a girl from a Vietnamese village who faces hardships and struggles during the Vietnam War. Heaven and Earth is just one of the many films (and texts) that takes place during the Vietnam War. Those films and texts often show the struggles that the Vietnamese experienced during the war2.
Platoon3 was also directed by Oliver Stone. This film was based on Stone's experiences during the Vietnam War. Charlie Sheen and Tom Berenger star in Platoon and show the struggles and the experience of the Vietnam War4.
Miss Saigon5 was a musical by Claude-Michel Schönberg and Alain Boublil about an Asian prostitute who fell in love with an American soldier6. Like Heaven and Earth, Miss Saigon took place during the Vietnam War in the 1970s. Recently, there has been a petition/campaign against Miss Saigon. Some people believe that Miss Saigon is a bad representation of Vietnam and involves many lies about Vietnam7. http://dontbuymiss-saigon.tumblr.com/
All of these films/musical show the negative perception Americans have on Vietnam. Vietnam is always associated with hardships, war, violence, and prostitution. Films set in Vietnam always seem to take place during the Vietnam War.
