Reading the City: Ho Chi Minh City
While there are texts that speak to Vietnam’s wartime events, new media and texts are emerging about Vietnam’s globalized shift. Vietnam is then casted as a unique place where urbanization and international investments play a huge role in the development of major cities, like Ho Chi Minh City. Official texts from government agencies prioritize investment and promote a business-like environment. While the official Ho Chi Minh Website details the history of the name change, it still shows that
According to the Ho Chi Minh City Government website, “HCM City has a political position just behind Hanoi, the capital[, and] has great potential for developing industry, exports, tourism and services. In coordination with other localities, HCM City is forming an agro-industrial economic structure for the country’s socio-economic development” (Ho Chi Minh City Government). Ho Chi Minh City has approximately 38 consulates, which spans the world. Not only is Ho Chi Minh City the center for economic revitalization within its borders, it is also the center for official trade, investment, and multinational corporations to lay they footprints.
The official Ho Chi Minh City webpage highlights tourism and “how-to’s” for doing business. Its photo gallery also shows a glimpse of attractions and icons in Ho Chi Minh City. Its news also prioritizes investment. On the “Sister Cities” tab, we see a list of global cities, for which the government compares Ho Chi Minh City to. From that list, we see Toronto, San Francisco, Shanghai, Osaka, and more.
Ho Chi Minh City's tourism website showcases Vietnam’s progressing economic status in the world. The home page reads “500 businesses from more than 30 countries and territories are participating in the 2012 International Travel Expo (ITE HCMC), which opened in Ho Chi Minh City on September 12” (Saigon Tourist). “Its Entertainment & Recreation” page shows what appears to be country golf clubs and resorts, unusual for a developing country, but typical for a global city, such as Dubai.
