Beijing is a tourist city, with many ancient and modern attractions that bring visitors from around the world. The Beijing Tourist Website details some of these places, as well as this official tourism video from 2013 and key attractions include:

These are places that make any Beijingers list of key places to go, and represent the official reading of the city.
But there are many other lesser known historical and cultural sites that one can find if they dig below the surface. Esoteric museums and forgotten temples. . . local cuisine. . . small coffee shops. . . slices of forgotten history. . . and on and on. . .
Once should appreciate the official places, but also try to find those off the radar. . .
