Applying Buddhist Teachings to Live a Happier Life, Both Online and Offline

(3) Right Speech

Do you remember when you were a kid and people told you, "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all."?

That's what the third step refers to. Be intentional with the things that you say, this includes all forms of communication. Try to think about the things you want to communicate before you put them out there. Is what you're saying going to hurt someone? Will it cause a negative, or a positive reaction in the world? Right Speech is about bringing your values and principles into your communication with others.

Perhaps no where is this more applicable then in the online world. In the face of recent events like Gamergate, it is strikingly clear that many people do not think about the effects their words have on others. It does you no harm to communicate in a positive way, and doing so will make you personally happier.

Practicing Right Speech is like a double blessing; you will be a better person, happier and living a better life, and you will also be helping to create a better, kinder world.
