Understory 2024

‎ ‎ FROM THE STUDENT INTERNS

As the editors, developing Understory 2024 was an intensive and challenging process. As a team we created posters to solicit the creative side of submissions, established a social media presence on Instagram, developed a rubric to evaluate nearly 100 submissions, and drafted a template in which to format both the creative and scholarly works. Selecting the creative works required a great deal of organization and time. We couldn’t have gotten very far without our development of a clear rubric, and even so the decisions to pick which pieces would make it into the final version were extremely difficult.

Writing can be such an unflinchingly vulnerable thing. Creative endeavors require courage and openness. It is through this vulnerability of sharing one's experiences, thoughts, and emotions, that meaningful connections are forged, and powerful stories are told. In showcasing the diverse range of submissions received, this anthology celebrates the courage and creativity of its contributors. Each piece represents a leap of faith, a willingness to embrace uncertainty, and a commitment to authenticity. As readers embarking on this literary journey, may you be inspired to embrace your own little leaps, with openness and curiosity. Including the scholarly works selected by faculty, taken together there are 33 poems, 6 plays, 5 fiction pieces, 6 non-fiction pieces, and 9 scholarly works from 25 different contributors. These authors took a chance on something, and that leap has brought you an anthology we at Understory are proud to present.
