Understory 2024

‎ ‎ FROM THE FACULTY ADVISORS AND PROJECT LIAISONS

Welcome to the most recent edition of Understory! As the faculty mentors for this project, we are proud of its vitality and resilience over the past eight years. The level of student productivity in research and scholarship activity the Department of English has been able to showcase with Understory has been phenomenal, and shows the strength of student achievement here at the University of Alaska—over that time Understory has featured 97 scholarly papers written by 99 authors and 286 creative works authored by 207 students, and has been edited by 19 student interns, including the four who worked on the project this year. We are especially pleased that this year’s team of interns includes one who is based on a community campus.

As we look ahead, the Understory project is well-positioned to serve an integral role as we revise the English Studies major at the University of Alaska Anchorage to foreground coursework and experiential learning that foreground deep analysis and reasoning, and thus that directly connect to a wide range of careers provide students the skills needed in a broad range of careers and professions, including teaching, journalism, health, management, and law—in short, any field that involves reading, writing, and reasoning.
