Thanks for your patience during our recent outage at scalar.usc.edu. While Scalar content is loading normally now, saving is still slow, and Scalar's 'additional metadata' features have been disabled, which may interfere with features like timelines and maps that depend on metadata. This also means that saving a page or media item will remove its additional metadata. If this occurs, you can use the 'All versions' link at the bottom of the page to restore the earlier version. We are continuing to troubleshoot, and will provide further updates as needed. Note that this only affects Scalar projects at scalar.usc.edu, and not those hosted elsewhere.

The two video clips show the differences in the gameplay between the 1991 and the 2022 Editions of Smith's King of Space. The 1991 Edition, created with the hypertext authoring program called Hypergate, requires the player to launch the game by clicking twice on the "King of Space" file in the game's folder. Once launched players encounter black and white interface, simple animations, and a menu of tabs that read "All Text Is A Game." Players move through the game by clicking the icon of the three black dots. The 10 mini-games Smith created for the game are embedded in the main gameplay and challenge the player's experience with the game.
The 2022 Web Edition, created with HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript, requires players to launch the game by clicking the "Play Game" button on the opening screen. From there they can "Begin Story" or play the 'Game Only Mode." Once the story begins, players encounter full color images and animations. The mini-games have been moved to the "Game Only Mode" to establish a coherent gameplay for the narrative.
